The drawing is the next phase with hatching to accentuate and contrast. It is the same device used in the last major work, supporting a topographical relief. This time, there is a much more internalized relief to explore. Some shapes are vivid and primal I think. I’m sure the clay is a very old, prehistoric, element which drags the image inwards and downwards. Yang.
So, the hatching will be part of the resolution, a Yin floating, rising force. (all a bit presumptuous as the process has not begun yet.)
The photographs cover the idea from the first steps through to the clay being scrapped off and even washing of the surface with a hose to remove the dust.
There is a cycle of a shadow image which I photographed. It is the impression left on the clay tablet. I glued paper onto the tablet so as to be able to remove it, with a metal scraper, and laid it down on another stretcher as the negative. Once photographed I stacked them and stored them. Feels like something connected and essential but I have not decided how to use it. At times, it all feels like too much stuff in the world, too much excitement, too much colour/paint/clay..everything. These clay tablets are in a box, under the house, in the dark. Clay is weird.
Perhaps it needs fire to finish it off!
I am aware that there are many ideas and images floating around in this one, points which I could elaborate upon and develop. I think there is already a process that I am engaged in, following to it”s resolution. This piece has been sitting for a month while the 4 panels are moved forward. This piece is the next in line I think. I see where it needs to go and impatient to see it revealed and I will have more to say with the critique…….
